Chapter 87: The Scraper and the Fixer
Luo Chen moved through the corridor like smoke.
The null point held. Personal, individual, consuming his focus but rendering him invisible to the system's sight. The guards at the corridor's end did not see him. The ancestor-stones on the walls did not register him. The construct on the stairs, still processing below, did not alert.
He reached the cell door.
It was ancient wood. Pre-Monument, like Fen's door in the western tower. Resistant to ancestor resonance. The system used it for special prisoners because the system's power could not touch what existed before it.
Luo Chen pressed his ear to the wood.
Inside, Shan spoke.
"She is coming. The girl. Twelve years old. Gray-eyed, like her brother. Unbound, like her brother." A pause. "Do you know what correction does to children, scraper? Their minds are flexible. Their identities are fluid. The system can reshape them. Erase what they were. Make them into something useful."
Fen's voice. Weak, rough, but still sharp.
"You talk too much, fixer."
"I talk because you do not."
"I do not talk because you have nothing I want to hear." Fen's laugh was a dry rasp. "You think threatening the girl will break me. You think I am a cultivator, bound by love, driven by attachment. I am a blank. I have nothing. I am nothing. You cannot take from one who has nothing."
"Everyone has something."
"Not me." Another rasping laugh. "I scraped my own name long ago. There is nothing left to correct."
Luo Chen felt the seed pulse.
He understood now.
Fen's teaching. His patience. His refusal to be categorized. It was not strategy. It was truth. The old man had scraped his own name from the system's records. He had erased himself before the system could erase him.
And in that erasure, he had found freedom.
But Luo Chen also understood something else.
Fen was lying.
Not about being blank. Not about having nothing. But about not caring.
The old man cared. About Xiao. About the names he had collected. About the seed he had helped build.
And Shan knew it.
"Bring her in," Shan said.
The cell door began to open.
Luo Chen had no time to think.
The null blade activated. Not a sphere of invisibility, but a narrow edge of absence. He pressed it against the door's hinge.
The hinge was iron. Physical. The null blade did not cut iron.
But the binding that held the hinge, the ancestor resonance that reinforced the door's lock, flickered. Stuttered. Died.
The door swung open.
Luo Chen stepped through.
Shan stood in the center of the cell. Tall, lean, his Luo Clan robes immaculate, his face the same blank mask it had always been. Behind him, Fen sat against the wall. Thinner than before, bruised, his scraping blade nowhere in sight.
And in the doorway on the far side, guards held Xiao.
She was small. Fragile. Her gray eyes were wide, her face pale, her hands bound with ancestor-chains that burned her skin.
But she saw Luo Chen.
And she smiled.
Not with hope. With recognition.
"Brother," she whispered.
Shan turned.
He did not see Luo Chen. The null point held. But he saw the door open. He saw the hinge unbound. He saw the space where a person should be.
"The null point," he said. Not surprised. Assessing. "I wondered when you would develop it fully."
Luo Chen dropped the null point.
Not because he had to. Because hiding was no longer enough.
Shan looked at him.
At the boy who had been exiled. The blank who had survived. The seed-bearer who stood in the heart of the Luo Clan's power, armed with nothing but a wooden pole and a blade of absence.
"You should have stayed hidden," Shan said.
"I should have many things," Luo Chen replied. "But I am here. And you will let them go."
Shan smiled.
It was the first expression Luo Chen had ever seen on his face.
"No," Shan said.
And the cell filled with ancestor resonance.
Not fire. Not force. Something older. The Luo ancestor's direct presence. Channeled through Shan, amplified by the tower, concentrated in a space no larger than a cell.
It was not an attack.
It was categorization.
You are blank, the resonance declared. You are nothing. You do not exist. Accept this, and be at peace.
Luo Chen felt the pressure.
It was like the ceremony all over again. The weight of a thousand bindings, a thousand oaths, a thousand ancestors demanding that he acknowledge his place.
His place was nowhere.
His place was nothing.
His place was the void where a person should be.
The seed screamed.
The library flickered.
Zero's stone held.
And Luo Chen stood.
"I am blank," he said. "I am nothing. I am the void. And the void . " he raised the wooden pole ". the void does not obey."
He struck.
Not at Shan. At the floor.
The pole caught the ancient stone. Pre-Monument stone, resistant to resonance, full of the silence beneath the noise. The impact sent a shockwave through the cell. Not physical. Spiritual.
The ancestor resonance faltered.
Just for a moment.
Just long enough.
Luo Chen grabbed Fen's arm. He reached for Xiao. The guards were still processing, still shocked, still unable to comprehend what was happening.
And he ran.
Not toward the stairs. Toward the window.
The third-floor window. Narrow. High above the courtyard.
Luo Chen did not hesitate.
He jumped.
Fen in one arm. Xiao's hand in the other. The three of them falling through the dawn light, the ancestor resonance screaming behind them, Shan's voice rising in a command that would summon every bound cultivator in the hall.
They fell.
And the Founder statue looked up.
Its cracked face. Its weeping eye. Its dark hollow that had once been blank.
It looked up.
And for the first time in millennia, the Luo Clan Founder. The ancestor, the system, the binding .
smiled.
