Chapter 85: The Garden of Binds
The ancestral hall's gardens were not gardens.
They were displays. Living exhibits of the Luo Clan's power, history, dominance. Every tree was ancestor-blessed, its growth directed by resonance to form shapes of submission. Bowing branches, prostrate trunks, roots that twisted into the clan's sigil.
Every stone was carved with names. Not the names of individuals. The names of bindings. Oaths sworn. Blood given. Sacrifices made.
Every path was straight. Ordered. The system did not tolerate wandering.
Luo Chen moved through it like a ghost.
The null point held, but it was thinner here. The ancestor resonance was concentrated, ancient, heavy. It pressed against his silence like deep water against a shell.
He could feel the system's attention.
Not on him specifically. The null point still protected him from categorization. But on the space around him. The system sensed something wrong. An absence where presence should be. A blank in the pattern.
It sent patrols to investigate.
Luo Chen avoided them.
Not with the null point. He could not afford the cost. With Fen's lessons. With Thorn's training. With the simple, patient skill of someone who had learned that survival was movement without trace.
He reached the inner courtyard.
The Founder statue stood at its center.
Up close, the damage was worse. The crack had widened since his ceremony. From a hairline to a finger's width. Stone dust wept from the dark eye, pooling at the base like tears.
And at the base...
Luo Chen froze.
Names.
Hundreds of them. Carved into the stone foundation. Not by the clan's craftsmen. These were rough, desperate, scratched with fingernails or sharp stones or whatever had been available.
Names of blanks.
Names of the erased.
Names of those who had stood where he stood, looked up at this statue, and left their mark before the system could take them.
Luo Chen knelt.
He touched the nearest name. Barely legible, worn by time and weather and the system's indifference.
Wei, it read. Blank. Existed.
He touched another.
Lin. Refused binding. Died free.
Another.
No name. No clan. Was here.
The seed opened.
The library accepted them. Every name. Every mark. Every desperate proof of existence scratched into stone by those who had nothing else.
And as the names entered the library, the Founder statue shuddered.
Not physically. The stone did not move. But spiritually. Resonantly. The ancestor's hum, constant and dominating, flickered.
The dark eye turned.
Toward Luo Chen.
Toward the blank who knelt at its feet, collecting names.
And the statue spoke.
Not aloud. Not in words that anyone else could hear. In a whisper that entered the seed directly, bypassing ears and air and the system's censors.
"You came."
Luo Chen looked up.
The Founder's cracked face gazed down at him. One half serene. One half weeping. Two expressions in one stone.
"I came," Luo Chen whispered back.
"The others did not come. The blanks before you. They ran. They hid. They died." The voice was ancient, tired, full of a grief that had accumulated over millennia. "You are the first to return."
"Return?"
"To this place. To me. To what I was before I became..." The voice paused. "This."
Luo Chen stood.
He faced the statue.
"What were you before?"
"A blank. Like you. A nothing. A void where the system expected a person." The dark eye gleamed. "I built something. Not a library. I was not so wise. I built a monument. A place to stand. A name to hold. And the system... the system took it. Made it binding. Made me ancestor. Made my choice into a prison."
Luo Chen felt cold.
Root's warning echoed in his mind. The system does not destroy blanks. It recruits them.
"You are not an ancestor," he said.
"I am what remains of one. A fragment. A ghost in the machine." The statue's voice grew weaker, as if speaking cost something precious. "The system scraped my true name. Replaced it with 'Founder.' Turned my existence into a resource. My descendants feed me. I feed the system. A cycle. A siphon."
Luo Chen touched the crack in the statue's base.
"Our names were scraped off," the Founder whispered. "All of us. Every blank who ever tried to build something. The system does not erase us. It harvests us."
"How do I stop it?"
"You do not stop it." The Founder's voice was fading, the ancestor resonance reasserting itself, the system's control tightening around the crack. "You outlast it. You build something the system cannot harvest. Something that does not bind. Something that simply... is."
"The library."
"Yes. The library. The names. The choice." The dark eye closed. "But hurry, seed-bearer. The correction begins at dawn. And Shan... Shan knows about the names. He knows about Fen. He knows about the scraping."
"What will he do?"
"He will try to burn the names. To erase the proof. To correct what cannot be corrected." The Founder's voice was barely a whisper now. "Find the scraper. Find Fen. He knows the rest. He knows what I could not say. What the system prevents me from saying."
The statue went silent.
The ancestor resonance hummed again, loud and full and overwhelming.
But the crack remained.
And the dust still wept from the dark eye.
Luo Chen stood in the courtyard, the names of a hundred blanks in his library, the Founder's warning in his mind, and the null blade flickering at his fingertips.
Dawn was coming.
The correction was coming.
And somewhere in the tower above, Fen waited. The scraper who knew the truth.
The truth that the system had buried.
The truth that the Founder could not speak.
The truth that would change everything.
Luo Chen moved toward the tower.
The null point held.
And the seed inside him pulsed with a new rhythm.
Not hunger.
Not hope.
Determination.
