Chapter 78: The Flight from the Tower
The alarm was not a sound.
It was resonance. A pulse through the ancestor stones that every bound Luo cultivator felt in their bones. The tower was breached. The prisoner was escaping. All available personnel respond.
Luo Chen felt it as pressure.
The system's noise, suddenly loud, demanding attention, demanding response. It vibrated in his teeth, behind his eyes, a frequency designed to compel, to mobilize, to override individual will with collective urgency.
But he was not bound.
The alarm passed through him like wind through a screen. He felt it, recognized it, let it go. Beside him, Luo Xiao winced. The founder inside her felt it too, a distant echo of command that the ancient ancestor recognized even if he did not obey.
"They know," Luo Xiao said.
"They know." Luo Chen adjusted Fen's weight on his shoulder. The old man was walking, barely, supported by Luo Chen's arm. "We need to move faster."
They reached the entrance.
The guards they had knocked out were still unconscious. Good. But shapes were moving in the darkness beyond the tower walls. Patrols responding to the alarm. Cultivators linking into formations.
"The null point," Fen whispered. "Can you hold it?"
"For myself. Not for all of us."
"Then do not hold it for all of us." Fen's voice was weak but sharp. "Hold it for yourself. Walk through them. Let them see me and Xiao. Let them think they have found their prisoners."
"No."
"Yes." Fen stopped, forcing Luo Chen to stop with him. "Listen to me, boy. You are the seed. You are the library. You are what matters. If they catch me, I am an old man who knows nothing they have not already failed to extract. If they catch you, everything ends."
"I will not leave you."
"You are not leaving me. You are saving what I built." Fen's gray eye met his. "Walk through them. Use the null point. Get to the Pre-Monument woods. And when you are safe, when the seed is strong enough, come back for us."
Luo Chen was silent.
The tower's stone walls pressed close around them, cold and damp, smelling of mold and old violence. Somewhere above, a door slammed. Footsteps echoed. Too many, moving fast.
The seed inside him pulsed.
The library whispered.
Zero's stone hummed.
And he understood.
Fen was not sacrificing himself. He was teaching one last lesson. The same lesson he had taught from the beginning. Survival was not about saving everyone. It was about saving what mattered. About choosing which stories to preserve and which to let go.
"I will come back," Luo Chen said.
"I know." Fen smiled. A real smile, despite the bruises, despite the weakness, despite everything. "That is why I am not afraid."
Luo Chen turned to his sister.
"Xiao..."
"I know." She hugged him, quick and fierce. "Go. Be the library. Remember us."
He hugged her back.
Then he activated the null point.
And walked into the darkness.
The Luo patrols passed within feet of him.
He was a void. A blank. A space where no resonance registered, no ancestor sensed, no system could categorize.
He walked past guards who were searching for three fugitives and found only two. Their breath fogged in the cold night air. Their boots crunched on gravel. One of them carried a torch that spat embers into the darkness, and Luo Chen had to step around its light, around its heat, around the physical reality that the null point could not erase.
He walked past formations that hummed with Luo ancestor power and felt nothing from him.
He walked through the heart of Luo Clan territory, invisible, untouchable, untraceable.
And with every step, the seed grew heavier.
Not with power.
With absence.
Fen was behind him.
Xiao was behind him.
The only family he had, the only people who mattered, and he was walking away.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he had to.
Because the library needed to survive.
Because the names needed to be remembered.
Because one day, when the seed was deep enough and the proof strong enough, he would return.
And the system would tremble.
He reached the boundary at dawn.
The ancestor pillars hummed, their resonance searching for the fugitive they knew had escaped.
But they did not find him.
The null point held.
The silence beneath the noise was deeper than their searching.
Luo Chen crossed into the Pre-Monument woods.
And collapsed.
Not from exhaustion. Not from injury.
From grief.
He lay on the ancient soil, the seed screaming inside him, the library weeping with names that he could not save, and he let himself feel it. The earth was soft here, rich, full of the slow patience of root and worm and decaying leaf. It smelled of life. Real life, not the system's curated, categorized existence. It cradled him like a hand.
All of it.
The loss. The guilt. The weight of being the one who survived when others did not.
He let himself be broken.
Because only by breaking could he become whole.
Only by feeling the pain could he understand what he was fighting for.
Only by losing everything could he build something that could not be lost.
The Pre-Monument woods held him.
The silence enfolded him.
And the seed, deep, stable, anchored by Zero's stone, began to heal.
Not quickly.
Not easily.
But it began.
Luo Chen lay in the ancient forest, alone but not alone, broken but not destroyed, and waited for the strength to continue.
The first hunt was ending.
And something new was beginning.
