Chapter 146: The Only Blank-Born

Gathering essence...

"You do not get to choose this," Luo Chen said.

The rain filled the space between them, turning the clearing into a world of silver and gray. Fen stood on one side of the stone, old and scarred and inexplicably calm. Luo Chen stood on the other, sixteen years old, shaking with something that was not cold.

"I do get to choose," Fen said. "That is what you have been fighting for. The right to choose. The right to refuse the path that was assigned. So let me refuse the path of survival. Let me choose the path that means something."

"It means death."

"It means purpose."

Xiao sat at the clearing's edge, her back against a trunk, her burned hand cradled in her lap. She watched them with gray eyes that held no judgment. Only exhaustion, and pain, and the distant awareness that she was too weak to intervene. The seed in Luo Chen's chest pulsed with her pulse. Slow. Thready. Barely sufficient.

The twelve defectors formed a loose circle around the argument. They did not speak. They had followed Fen out of the system, out of certainty, out of the only lives they had known. They owed him their presence. They owed him their witness.

"Explain it to me," Luo Chen said. "Explain how it works. Not the poetry. The mechanism."

Fen nodded.

"The siphon is a channel. It extracts cultivation energy from marked individuals, transmits it through the network, delivers it to the Ancestral Heaven. The process requires resonance. The energy must be compatible with the channel's frequency. Cultivation energy is compatible. Blankness is not."

"You told me this."

"What I did not tell you is the channel's defense mechanism." Fen placed his scarred hand on the stone. The spirals beneath his palm dimmed slightly. Recognizing his scraped mark, his liminal state, his neither-nor existence. "When incompatible matter enters the channel, the siphon attempts to correct it. To convert it. To render it harvestable. The correction energy floods the point of intrusion. It consumes the intruder completely."

"You would be burned alive."

"I would be unmade." Fen's voice was steady. "Correction energy does not merely kill. It erases. Body, spirit, memory, name. The system would consume every part of me, trying to find something it could use. And when it found nothing, when my scraped mark proved truly empty, the void would destabilize the channel."

"How long?"

"Seconds. Perhaps minutes. Long enough for the cascade to reach the Luo harvest node. Long enough for the network to overload. Long enough for Shan to lose his map." Fen smiled. Small, sad, the smile of a man who had finally found the arithmetic that balanced his ledger. "And long enough for you to run."

Luo Chen shook his head.

"There must be another way. The null point. The seed. I could enter the channel instead . "

"You are the seed-bearer." Fen's voice sharpened. "You carry ten thousand names. If you enter the siphon, the system does not merely correct a blank. It harvests a library. Every name you carry becomes fuel. Every story becomes energy. The ancestors feed on narratives, Luo Chen. They would devour your library and grow strong enough to hunt every blank-born child in the realm."

The seed recoiled. Luo Chen felt it. The library's instinctive fear, the names withdrawing from the thought of consumption.

"And Xiao?" Luo Chen asked.

"She is burned already. Her suppressed inheritance is damaged. The siphon would correct her in moments, and her void is not deep enough to destabilize anything. She would die for nothing."

"The defectors?"

"Bound-born. Marked. The siphon would harvest them normally. No void. No cascade." Fen looked at the twelve. Wei Jin with his shaking hand, Sister Mei with her blank-born eyes, Old Man Po with his earth-path scars. "They would simply be eaten. Efficiently. Pointlessly."

"Then you." Luo Chen's voice cracked. "Only you."

"Only me." Fen touched his chest, where the scraped mark lived. "I am technically blank-born. The mark was removed, not suppressed. The void is permanent. The system has no record of me. No channel, no resonance, no handle. I am the only person here who can introduce true absence into the harvest."

"You are seventy years old."

"I am seventy-three." Fen's mouth twisted. "Old enough to have outlived every person I ever scraped. Old enough to know what my ledger looks like. It is red, boy. It bleeds.

"You have survived everything. The Keepers, the system, the correction. You survived to help us. To help me. And now you want to . " Luo Chen could not finish the sentence. The words stuck in his throat like thorns.

"I want to finish," Fen said quietly. "I have been running since I was twenty. Hiding. Scraping. Serving and betraying and serving again. I have no monument to inherit. No descendants to remember me. Only this. Only the choice to matter for one moment."

The rain fell harder.

The stone hummed beneath it, drinking the water, drinking the ambient energy of the storm. The secondary node was patient. It had waited centuries. It could wait for their decision.

"No," Luo Chen said again.

But softer now.

Weaker.

Because he was sixteen, and he was tired, and he was beginning to understand that some choices were not his to prevent.
