Chapter 142: The Seven Names
They did not light a fire.
Fen insisted. A fire in the Pre-Monument woods would be a beacon. Not to ordinary scouts, but to the correction's senses, which tracked disruption more than flame. So they sat in darkness, sharing cold dried meat and water that tasted of stone, and Fen spoke.
"The sealed chamber," he said. "It held everything."
Luo Chen sat with Xiao's head in his lap. She had fallen into a shallow sleep, her breathing thin but steady. Her burned hand rested on her chest, rising and falling with each breath. The gray skin seemed to absorb what little light filtered through the canopy.
"Records," Fen continued. "Dates. The names of every Uninherited who came before you. And their fates."
Luo Chen felt the seed stir. The library within him, ten thousand names, ten thousand stories, seemed to lean forward, listening.
"How many?" he asked.
"Seven." Fen's scarred hands traced shapes in the dirt between his knees. "Seven who reached the chamber. Seven who learned what the siphon truly was. Seven who tried to stop it."
"Their names."
Fen looked at him. The old Keeper's eyes were wet. Not with tears, but with the strain of memory, of carrying something too heavy for too long.
"Luo Wei," Fen said. "Not the founder. The first. Three hundred years ago. He discovered the harvest and tried to sever his clan's connection. The correction took him in his sleep. His name was scraped from every record except the chamber's stone."
The seed pulsed. Luo Wei. A name added to the library, filling a gap Luo Chen had not known existed.
"Second: Mei Qian. A blank-born girl from the eastern valleys. She learned to walk through walls by becoming what the wall expected. Nothing. She reached the Ancestral Heaven's threshold and was consumed by it. The system does not tolerate visitors."
"Third: Chen Bo. He tried to organize the blanks. A rebellion, not of weapons, but of refusal. He taught twenty-three blanks to suppress their marks simultaneously. The siphon starved for a day. Then the correction found him. His body was displayed in nine monument halls as warning."
Luo Chen felt each name settle into him. Weight. Responsibility.
"Fourth: Jin Ru. She studied the frequency. The one that kills blanks. She learned to sing it backward, to cancel it. She saved hundreds before the system adapted. She is buried somewhere beneath the western wastes. The chamber's records say her grave has no marker, but the stone around it is always warm."
"Fifth: Fen."
Luo Chen blinked. "You?"
"Not me." The old Keeper's smile was broken. "My father. He was a blank who tried to become a Keeper from the inside. To change the system by serving it. He scraped names for twenty years, erasing blanks to save others. The contradiction broke him. He walked into a correction patrol rather than scrape one more."
The hollow was silent. Even the dripping water seemed to pause.
"Sixth," Fen continued, his voice rougher now. "The one the records call only Mister Blank. He reached the chamber fifty years ago. He did not try to destroy the siphon. He studied it. Mapped it. Learned its frequencies, its channels, its vulnerabilities. And then he escaped."
"Escaped where?"
"The Void Reach." Fen reached into his coat. He withdrew something. A flat stone, thin as a coin, etched with lines that seemed to move when viewed indirectly. "He left this. A map. Not to a place, but to a state. The Void Reach is not geography. It is the space where the siphon cannot extend. Where absence becomes location."
Luo Chen took the stone.
The seed recognized it. The library shuddered. Names whispered against his consciousness. Not the seven, but all ten thousand, seeming to lean toward this small etched disc as plants lean toward light.
"He is still there," Fen said. "Mister Blank. Alive, if that word applies. Waiting. Preparing. Building something from absence that the system cannot see."
"And the seventh?"
Fen was quiet for a long moment.
"The seventh reached the chamber three years ago. A boy. Gray-eyed. Carrying a seed he did not understand." Fen met Luo Chen's gaze. "You know his name."
"Luo Chen."
"No." Fen shook his head. "The seventh did not survive the chamber's final test. He learned the truth and could not bear it. He walked into the siphon willingly, trying to destroy it from within. The system corrected him in seconds. His name is in the stone, but his story ended there."
Luo Chen felt cold that had nothing to do with the woods.
"I am not the seventh."
"You are the eighth." Fen's voice dropped to a whisper. "The first to survive the chamber, escape the correction, and carry the seed into the open world. Do you understand what that means?"
"It means I am lucky."
"It means you are necessary." Fen's scarred hands closed into fists. "The others broke against the system because they faced it alone. You have the seed. You have the names. You have your sister. And you have . " He gestured to the twelve defectors, to Sister Mei, to himself. ". however much remains of us."
Xiao stirred in Luo Chen's lap. Her unburned hand found his, fingers intertwining.
"The eighth," she murmured, half-asleep. "Lucky number."
Luo Chen looked at the stone map in his palm.
The door opens inward, the chamber had said. And now: The Void Reach waits.
Two destinations. Two forms of absence. Two ways to stop running and start becoming.
But before he could choose, Sister Mei's eyes snapped open.
"They are here," she said. "The perimeter. It is closing."
