Chapter 135: The Offer
Yan Huo did not summon him for tea.
Instead, Luo Chen was brought to the command tent. Larger than the pavilion, armored with woven light and fire-path wards. The guards who escorted him were different. Soldiers with scarred hands and empty eyes.
The atmosphere had shifted.
Whatever Su Yao's visit had done, it had accelerated something. The camp felt coiled. Tense. A spring pressed to its limit.
Yan Huo stood at a map table.
The map showed the Azure Plains. Every village, every monument, every clan holding. Red pins marked the correction's progress. A cluster of them gathered around the Luo Monument Hall, pressing inward like teeth.
"The hall falls tomorrow," Yan Huo said without looking up. "Shan has ordered the final assault. The Luo ancestors will be harvested. The bound cultivators who remain loyal will be... repurposed. And the records . " He touched a pin near the hall's foundation. "The records will burn."
Luo Chen said nothing.
"Unless," Yan Huo continued, "someone retrieves them first."
He looked up.
The burned eyes were different today. Not clearer. They would never be clear again. But more focused. More deliberate. The doubt that had cracked his certainty was not gone, but it was being... managed. Controlled. Used.
"You want the records," Yan Huo said. "I know you do. Your father spoke of them before he died. The sealed chamber. The previous Uninherited. The truth about what the system does to blanks." He smiled. A thin, sharp expression. "I want something else. I want to understand the null point. Not to destroy it. To... incorporate it."
Luo Chen felt the seed recoil.
"Incorporate?"
"The system is failing." Yan Huo's voice dropped to a register that the fire-path guards could not hear. "The siphons are weakening. The Ancestral Heaven demands more cultivation, more energy. And the blanks . " He looked at Luo Chen. "The blanks are multiplying. Enough cracks to threaten the foundation."
He stepped closer.
"I am offering an alliance. You teach me the null point. In exchange, I give you the hall. Twenty-four hours. My forces will hold back the correction. You enter, you retrieve what you need, you leave. No pursuit. No burning."
"And after?"
"After, we part ways. You continue your rebellion. I continue my service. But we will both know something the system does not." Yan Huo's burned eyes gleamed. "We will know that the null point can be learned. That the binding can be... supplemented. That a path-bound cultivator can walk beside a blank without being consumed."
Luo Chen looked at the map. The red pins. The correction that was not about justice but about maintenance.
"You want to be free," Luo Chen said. "Without giving up your power."
"I want to be stable." Yan Huo's hand twitched. The same tremor Luo Chen had noticed before, the crack widening. "The Immolation Ancestor burns my doubt every morning. But the doubt returns every evening. Stronger each time. I am running out of things to burn."
"Then stop burning."
"I cannot." The words were raw, stripped of the heir's polish, the fire-path master's certainty. "The binding does not allow it. If I stop, the ancestor consumes me. If I continue, I consume myself. There is no path that leads to survival."
"There is always a path." Luo Chen stepped to the map table. He did not touch it, the fire-path wards would burn his fingers, but he leaned close enough to smell the ink, the parchment, the desperate planning of a man who controlled armies but could not control his own soul. "You are looking for a way to keep your power and lose your prison. But the null point is not a supplement. It is a replacement."
"You would have me give up everything."
"I would have you choose." Luo Chen turned to face him. "That is what the system takes. Not power. Choice. You did not choose the Immolation Ancestor. You were sorted into it. You did not choose to burn doubt. You were commanded to. Even this alliance. It is not a choice. It is a transaction. The system has trained you so completely that you cannot imagine relationship without exchange."
The silence stretched.
The command tent's wards hummed. The guards breathed. The map waited.
"Then teach me to choose," Yan Huo whispered.
"I cannot." Luo Chen walked toward the tent's entrance. The guards tensed, hands finding weapon hilts, but they did not stop him. The null point flickered. Not active, but present. A reminder that he could not be bound, could not be controlled, could not be made to obey. "Choice is not taught. It is practiced. And you have not practiced in so long that the muscle has atrophied."
"I refuse your offer, Yan Huo. Not because it is false, though it is. Not because it serves only you, though it does. I refuse because accepting would make me complicit in your binding. I would become the system that holds you. And I have spent my life learning to be the opposite of that."
He stepped into the light.
The guards moved to intercept. But Yan Huo raised a hand.
"Let him go."
"Young Master..."
"Let him go." Yan Huo's voice was flat. Defeated. Or perhaps, Luo Chen could not tell, relieved. "The blank has made his choice. The least we can do is honor it."
Luo Chen walked back to the prison tent.
The green cords were still at his wrists, but they meant nothing now. The null point had taught them uselessness. The guards followed at a distance, uncertain, their fire-path resonance flickering in confusion.
He reached the tent.
He sat on the sleeping mat.
And he reached into the seed.
The library opened. Not fully, never fully, but enough. The names whispered. Zero. Ash. Moss. Luo Tian. And at the edge, flickering, unstable, the name that had not yet decided what it was.
Yan Huo.
Luo Chen closed the library.
Outside, the camp prepared for war. Soldiers marched. Commands rang. The correction's machinery ground toward its inevitable conclusion.
But beneath it all, beneath the noise and the fire and the system's endless demand. Something else.
A pulse.
A warning.
The Luo Monument Hall, crying out in a frequency that only blanks could hear.
Luo Chen pressed his hand to his chest and felt the seed's urgency.
Something is wrong, it said.
Something is happening beneath the stone.
And you are not there to stop it.
