Chapter 123: The Null Point Deepens
Midnight came wrapped in fog.
Not ordinary mist. The Pre-Monument woods exhaled it from the pores of spiral trees, from the surfaces of upward streams, from the memory of an earth that had existed before the system learned to name things. It clung to Luo Chen's skin. It filled his lungs with the taste of ancient silence.
He stood at the hollow's center and practiced.
The null point was not a technique. It was absence shaped into a shell. Non-existence pressed into a bubble around the body. The space where a person should register on spiritual senses, replaced by nothing.
He had used it in moments. Seconds. The length of a breath.
He needed hours.
Luo Chen closed his eyes.
He reached into the seed. Past the heart-chamber where his father's presence waited. Into the foundation where Zero resided, the first name, the original blank, the nothing that was also everything.
Show me, he asked.
Zero did not speak. It simply was, and in being, it demonstrated.
The null point expanded.
Not from his dantian. From everywhere. From the spaces between his cells. From the pauses between his thoughts.
It covered him.
First the skin. Then the breath. Then the heartbeat. Then the spiritual signature. The faint, unique resonance that every living thing emitted, the fingerprint the system used to track, to categorize, to bind.
One by one, these signatures vanished.
Not hidden. Simply absent. As if Luo Chen had stepped out of the world without moving his feet.
He held it.
Ten seconds.
Thirty.
The strain built behind his eyes. A pressure, vast and relentless, like holding a door closed against an ocean. The natural state of things was presence, was existence, was the noisy assertion of being that the system amplified and harvested. Absence required choice, moment by moment.
Sixty seconds.
Ninety.
Luo Chen's knees trembled. Blood trickled from his nose. Hot, thin, the cost of maintaining a vacuum in a world full of pressure.
He released.
The null point collapsed. Presence rushed back in like water filling a hole. The world became loud again. The ancestor resonance hummed at the Pre-Monument boundary.
He gasped.
Wiped the blood from his nose. Looked at it on his fingers. Red. Normal. Present.
"Again," he whispered.
He activated the null point.
This time, faster. The seed recognized the pattern. Zero hummed approval. The bubble formed. Skin, breath, heartbeat, signature. Gone.
He held it.
Two minutes.
Three.
The pressure was familiar now. He knew its shape. He knew where it pressed hardest. At the temples, at the base of the spine, in the hollow of the throat.
He breathed through it.
Not fighting. Accepting. The pressure was a teacher, showing him the boundaries of his absence, the edges where the null point grew thin.
Five minutes.
He released. Less blood this time. Just a trace. His body was learning.
"Better," Fen said.
Luo Chen turned.
The old man sat at the hollow's edge, barely visible in the fog. He had been watching. Of course he had been watching. Fen watched everything. It was how he had survived sixty years as a blank in a world that murdered blanks.
"Not enough," Luo Chen said.
"No." Fen stood. He moved closer, his scarred hands gesturing at the air around Luo Chen's body. "The null point is not a muscle, Chen. It does not strengthen with repetition. It is a decision. You are not holding a shell around yourself. You are deciding, moment by moment, that you do not exist."
"Then how do I sustain it for hours?"
"You stop deciding." Fen's gray eyes met his. "You let the decision become habit. You let the habit become nature. You stop being a boy holding a shield and become a blank who simply is absent, the way a stone is silent or a shadow is dark."
"Show me."
Fen smiled. Rare. Grief and pride and memory.
Then he vanished.
Not dramatically. One moment, Fen stood before him. The next, only fog. Only mist. Only the absence where a man had been.
Luo Chen reached out with his spiritual senses.
Nothing.
Not a blank. Not a hollow. Simply nothing. As if Fen had never been.
"Where..."
Fen reappeared.
Same lack of drama. He simply was, where a moment before he had not been.
"I did not hold the null point," Fen said. "I wore it. Like a coat. Like skin. For sixty years, Chen, I have been absent in this way. The system does not hunt me because the system does not know I am here to hunt."
Luo Chen felt the seed stir.
Understanding moved through the library like wind through leaves.
He closed his eyes.
He reached for the null point again. But this time, he did not build it. He did not shape it. He simply chose it, and in choosing, let the choice settle into his bones.
I am not here, he decided. Not as a statement. As a definition.
The null point formed.
Slower. But smoother. Less effort. More certainty.
He held it.
Five minutes.
Ten.
The pressure came, but it was distant. Like weather seen through a window.
"Good," Fen said. "Now move."
Luo Chen took a step.
The null point flickered. Movement disrupted the pattern. Presence leaked through the gaps.
He stopped. Breathed. Let the choice settle deeper.
I am not here. Even when I move, I am not here. My motion is the motion of fog. My step is the step of shadow.
He took another step.
The null point held.
He walked around the hollow. Slowly at first. Then faster. Then at a run, stopping hard, changing direction.
Each time, the bubble flickered. Each time, he breathed and let it settle.
By dawn, he could maintain the null point for thirty minutes while moving.
Not enough. Not yet.
But closer.
Fen placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Rest now. Tonight, you leave. And when you leave, you will not be a boy running from the system. You will be a blank walking through it, unseen."
Luo Chen nodded.
He lay down in the hollow. The fog curled around him. The seed hummed. His father's presence watched from the heart-chamber, simply present in the way that only love could be.
Sleep came slowly.
But it came.
And in his dreams, Luo Chen walked through walls of fire, invisible, carrying the names of the dead like lanterns against the dark.
